ABOUT US

North Florida Women's Health & Counseling Services, Inc., located in Tallahassee, Florida, was founded in 1981 to provide the women of North Florida and South Georgia with compassionate, confidential abortion services and well-woman gynecological care.  It is our philosophy that women should be given the resources necessary to participate fully in their health care.  Because we recognize the importance of treating more than just a woman’s body, we strive to meet the emotional and intellectual needs of our patients as well.

Our dedicated staff of Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNPs), RNs, LPNs, Medical Assistants and others are women who care deeply about your comfort.  Our physicians are Board Certified/Board Eligible (BC/BE) gynecologists with advanced training in abortion services to assure your comfort and safety.  North Florida Women’s Health and Counseling Services, Inc., is the only state licensed facility in North-Central Florida that has been committed to meeting and exceeding all required standards for your health and safety for over 26 years.  Our facility is licensed and inspected by the State of Florida to insure compliance with state laws and regulations.  We are members of the National Abortion Federation, the Association for Reproductive Health Professionals, and the National Coalition of Abortion Providers; all of which are professional organizations dedicated to keeping reproductive health care safe and accessible.

First trimester abortion services are offered in our facility and provided by BC/BE licensed gynecologists.  We offer Chemical Abortion, also called Medical Abortion or Abortion by Pill, for women up to 7 weeks and 5 days from their last normal menstrual period (LNMP); and Vacuum Aspiration abortion for women up to 13 weeks and 6 days from their LNMP.

Women seeking these services participate in a preliminary meeting which includes an information session covering the abortion method, aftercare instructions, and a discussion of decision making and birth control needs.  The cost of the abortion includes the preliminary meeting, an ultrasound to determine eligibility, the abortion procedure (or medications for the Chemical Abortion process) and an aftercare checkup at our facility two weeks after the completion of the abortion.

Well-woman gynecological services are provided by our female nurse practitioners by appointment.  Services include; birth control exams, sexually transmitted infection testing, ultrasound for gestational dating, and annual gyn exams including pap smears and breast exams.  An appointment can be scheduled by phoning our office.  Be sure to let the staff know which services you are seeking.

We are glad to announce that after years of advocacy by reproductive health professionals and others; one product used for Emergency Contraception, “Plan B”, is now available without a prescription for anyone age 18 or older.  Emergency Contraception (EC) may be used as a means of preventing pregnancy after unprotected intercourse.  EC contains hormones that reduce the risk of pregnancy if started within 120 hours (5 days) of unprotected intercourse.  The sooner the treatment is started, the more effective it is.  EC has no effect on an established pregnancy; it will not work if you are already pregnant.  Therefore, it is important to obtain a negative pregnancy test result before taking EC.  Be sure to read the package insert.  EC is very effective but not 100% effective.  You will need to take a pregnancy test 2-3 weeks after use to determine if it has prevented pregnancy.  You may request “Plan B” from your local pharmacist if you are 18 or over.  If you are younger than 18 you will need a prescription to obtain “Plan B”.  Call our office at (850) 877-3183 to schedule a consultation appointment.  You can also use the Emergency Contraception (EC) Hotline at 1-888-NOT-2-LATE or visit their website at www.not-2-late.com.

We provide free urine pregnancy testing on a walk-in basis (call ahead for hours of availability); and offer medically accurate, unbiased information about pregnancy options.  This includes information on abortion, adoption and pre-natal care referrals.  All of our services are provided with dignity, respect and the strictest standards of confidentiality.

As part of our more than 26 years of dedication to women, we conduct educational talks on birth control methods, sexually transmitted infections, and reproductive rights for schools and community organizations.  We have been a leader in the pro-choice community, diligently challenging any legislation that seeks to restrict a woman’s right to choose.  It is our goal to keep abortion safe and legal, allowing women of all ages to have access to the best care for years to come.  Our commitment to providing women with individualized and compassionate care has made us the most referred to abortion provider in the area.

We encourage you to get involved in protecting your right to choose safe, legal abortion.  Call our office or contact other pro-choice groups, such as the National Abortion Federation www.prochoice.org,  or the National Coalition of Abortion Providers www.ncap.com for details about what you can do.  Protect your right to choose, Vote Pro-Choice.
